Elafonissi Beach – one of Europe’s most beautiful beaches
Is a beach just a beach? If you ask me, it’s not! So when the weather on Crete showed itself from its best side, even though we visited at the end of the season, we had to take a trip to Elafonissi Beach.
Elafonissi Beach on the south-west of Crete is not a place you randomly pass by. Not if you live in one of the more popular holiday resorts near Chania. It is not possible to get here with public transport, so if you want to visit, you have to either rent a car or join an organized tour.
A tour to Elafonissi Beach
We chose to buy a tour through our travel agency. We simply could not miss the beach, that is said to be the best on Crete and one of the most beautiful in Europe.
As usual on an organized tour like this, we had to make a stop along the way where we could buy something. Normally these stops at “authentic” shops bothers me, but it didn’t this time. We stopped in a village in the mountains where we could enjoy the view of the landscape and buy a few supplies to take with us to Elafonissi. On Elafonissi Beach there are only a few shops where you can buy the usual stuff: A bit of boring fast food, ice cream and soda. When we saw that this village was filled with newly harvested oranges, and that we could buy freshly squeezed orange juice, it did not take us long to get our wallets out of our pockets. The juice was literally squeezed while we waited in line – it doesn’t get more fresh and delicious as this!
After the stop we continued with the bus through the mountains. After a total driving time of 1,5 hours we arrived at the famous beach, and we immediately started looking for just the right place to lay down. You will find lots of sunbeds and umbrellas that you can rent at a very fair price, but if you don’t want to spend your money on this, there is plenty of space where you and your beach towel can settle down.
A lively place…
Luckily, we arrived at Elafonissi before noon. As time went by, more and more people arrived. If you like some peace and quiet, I will recommend for you to come early. If you on the other hand would like to have a day on the beach in a more lively setting with people playing beach volley, music from several speakers and people having fun in the water, you will appreciate it here in the afternoon. As we left in the middle of the afternoon, the beach was beginning to be a bit too lively for me. I can only imagine what it must be like here in the high season!
The pink beach on Crete
I know that Elafonissi is a popular beach – and that it is not because of the peaceful surroundings you visit. It is the crystal clear blue ocean, the surrounding mountains and the white sandy beach (which sometimes looks a bit pink!), that draws so many visitors here. The beach is very child friendly, as you have to go a looong way out in order for the water to get deep. If you visit on a good day, you might even be able to see how the sand in the shoreline is almost pink. It is small, crushed shells that give the sand this color – and pretty it is! Just don’t expect to see an extremely vibrant pink beach, as you do in many of the colorful brochures.
As I have mentioned earlier, there is not much else besides the beach out here. There are a few places you can buy something to eat and drink, and besides that you will find bathing- and toilet facilities you can use for a fee. It might be a good idea to bring some change, so you can pay a visit to the men’s and ladies’ room.
We really enjoyed our day at Elafonissi Beach. Our time there was well spend with watching the beautiful surroundings, taking a cool dip in the ocean, and enjoying a good book. If you, like me, do not think that a beach is just a beach, I will definitely recommend a visit here. Not all people can say that they have set foot on a pink beach…
