We did not expect to see much of the sun while visiting Edinburgh – and we didn’t! So when it chose to come out from behind the clouds one evening, we decided to go to Calton Hill to enjoy the sunset with a stunning view of the city.
Amazing view of Edinburgh
From Calton Hill you have a great view of the entire city. You can look down at the lively Princes Street where Balmoral Hotel sticks out with its beautiful bell tower. The clock there is actually always two minutes ahead, so that the busy passengers at the nearby train station are not running late. If you look in the direction of the Old Town, you can see Edinburgh Castle that is placed on one of the many hills in the city.
It is not just in the direction of the city center that you can get a great view at Calton Hill. In the opposite direction you can spot the water in the distance, and it is also possible to get a good look at Arthur’s Seat – the extinct volcano that Edinburgh can boast about. To be fair, it looks mostly like an enormous, grassy hill, and it has been more than 350 million years since its last eruption.
The atmosphere at Calton Hill is great, and it was visited by a lot of different people while we were there. Some went for a walk with their tail wagging dogs, young people celebrated their recently finished exams with a beer, and a lot of tourists, like ourselves, tried to catch the best snapshot for the photo album. A lot of people also just enjoyed the view, which is hard not to be impressed by!
How to find Calton Hill
We were lucky to stay right beside Calton Hill at Princes Street Suites. From Regent Road you will find stairs most of the way to the top. It is a steep rise, but not impossible to handle. And when you arrive at the top to enjoy the view, you will be happy that you climbed the stairs!
